Every person here, working sales tax full time
Our story
We have been doing sales tax since before economic nexus existed. Thirty-four years later it is still the only thing we do.
Peisner Johnson opened in Dallas with one specialty: state and local tax. Most accounting firms treated sales tax as an afterthought and gave it to whoever was free that week. This one built its entire practice on it.
The early clients were manufacturers, distributors, and retailers selling across state lines, and their exposure was already too tangled for off-the-shelf accounting software.
South Dakota v. Wayfair replaced physical presence with economic nexus. Overnight a business could owe sales tax in a state it had never set foot in, on revenue or transaction count alone.
Every state wrote its own rules, and they kept rewriting them. We had spent twenty-six years tracking registration, filing, and sourcing rules state by state. The new law created far more of that same work.
We narrowed the practice again, concentrating on the work that takes judgment: nexus studies, voluntary disclosure agreements, audit defense, taxability analysis, and cleaning up exposure.
We kept filing returns, but only for clients whose position we had worked out first.
The firm joined Ampleo, a national consulting firm, and took the name people had been using for it anyway. The sales tax practice kept its team, its clients, and the final say on its own work.
Sales tax questions rarely stay sales tax questions. They surface in diligence, or halfway through a system migration. Now when that happens we have fractional CFOs and finance leaders down the hall, so the conversation no longer ends at a referral.

We joined Ampleo, a national consulting firm, and became The Sales Tax People. Sales tax stayed exactly where it was, with the same people and the same specialization. The difference is depth: when a sales tax question turns into a CFO-level question, we have colleagues down the hall instead of a referral list.
The same team you hired stays on your account.
We still only do state and local tax, with more room for complex work.
Fractional finance, marketing, and HR leaders when you need them.
Working here
Thirty-one people, hired one at a time. We would rather leave a seat open than fill it with the wrong person.
Our own people rated us, and the certification followed. We care more about the reason we earned it: you can do good work here and still have a life outside it.
Three offices, and a team that works well from anywhere.
You become an expert in one thing instead of a generalist in ten.
Filing deadlines are monthly, so the work stays steady.
A small firm where the next role up is usually one you help define.
Nothing is posted right now. That changes often. We open a new seat every month or two, and the people we hire are usually already on our radar.
Tell us what you do. We will reach out when a role fits.

Three offices in Utah and Texas, and a team spread across the country, which usually means someone on your file already knows your state.
Our largest office. Come shake a hand; the sunshine alone is worth the trip.
