In 1992, Andrew Johnson and Jerry Peisner, located in Dallas TX, decide to quit their jobs and together establish Peisner Johnson as a company, with the mission to solve state and local tax (SALT) problems. They developed new age, dedicated SALT solutions for retail, corporate tax executives, finance professionals, CPAs and tax accountants in public practice. They quickly grew to a team of 12 and were helping hundred of clients get compliant, remain compliant through these new establish systems, all while saving their clients time and money. The team excelled in helping their clients find peace of mind, knowing that their sales tax compliance was in good hands.

A supreme court ruling, South Dakota vs Wayfair, that fundamentally changed the landscape of sales tax collection in e-commerce. The ruling allowed states to require online retailers to collect sales tax, even if they didn't have a physical presence in the state. This decision marked a significant shift, ensuring that businesses, regardless of their location, could be held accountable for collecting and remitting sales tax on transactions. It aimed to create a more level playing field between traditional brick-and-mortar stores and online sellers, impacting sales tax compliance across the United States.

After this landmark Supreme Court case, Peisner Johnson quickly recognized the significant impact it would have on the sales tax landscape. It became evident that businesses would require a new breed of accountants specializing in sales tax to navigate the complex and evolving regulations. Responding to this need, Peisner Johnson proactively adapted its services and expertise to become a trusted leader in sales tax accounting. Mastering their understanding of economic nexus legislation (and its impact on taxpayers) in each state.

By 2021, the Peisner Johnson team had at this point helped thousands of clients get and remain sales tax compliant. In understanding the important role we continued to play for so many companies, we decided to embrace a significant brand evolution by adopting the tagline "The Sales Tax People." This change reflected our commitment to making complex sales tax matters more approachable and human-centered. While maintaining our decades of technical expertise, we wanted to emphasize that behind every calculation and compliance solution are real people who genuinely care about our clients' success. The tagline embodied our philosophy that sales tax consulting shouldn't feel overwhelming or impersonal - it should feel like working with knowledgeable friends who happen to be sales tax experts.

In 2024, we embarked on an exciting new chapter by merging with The Ampleo Group and officially rebranding as The Sales Tax People! This strategic move represents more than just a name change - it's a powerful combination of complementary strengths that positions us to better serve our clients in an increasingly complex tax landscape.

The merger with Ampleo brings together our deep sales tax expertise with the comprehensive business advisory and fractional executive services The Ampleo Group provides. Having utilized Ampleo's fractional executive services prior to the merger, we have been nothing but impressed by the level of expertise and attention these fractional leaders can bring to an organization.

Adopting The Sales Tax People as our official name was a natural evolution that reflects who we've always been at heart: approachable experts who make sales tax less taxing. While Peisner Johnson built a strong legacy over decades of service, our new identity better communicates our mission to simplify sales tax compliance while maintaining the personal touch that sets us apart.
